THE BEST OF TANZANIA
Up in the Air Life proudly presents a 9 Day Tanzanian Adventure including an African Safari and Zanzibar, archipelago off the coast of East Africa. Our luxury safari camp, Sanctuary Swala, is located in a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, one of the most exciting and least visited parks in the country. In the heart of Maasai country and a remote corner of the Tarangire, in total seclusion amongst giant acacia trees and looking out beyond the flat savannah, Sanctuary Swala offers a very exclusive safari experience. The picturesque landscape is filled with ancient baobab trees, ambling elephants and birds in flight. Built to the highest eco-friendly standards, this camp has a particularly low-carbon footprint.
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport you will be met by our team and transferred by private vehicle to your lodge located on the outskirts of Arusha. The remainder of your day is at leisure. Arusha Coffee Lodge is located on a coffee plantation on the outskirts of Arusha. Designed around the original plantation houses but completely renovated to achieve the highest standards of comfort, the décor is luxuriant and stylish with undertones of the bygone days of early exploration. Each of the plantation houses has been lavishly furnished and features a split level living area and a private deck. The lodge also boasts a coffee shop, patisserie, conference facilities and a swimming pool.
Early this morning you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to Arusha airstrip for you onward flight to Tarangire National Park. Upon arrival you will be met by a Camp Representative and transferred to Swala camp in our customised open safari vehicle.
Each of the twelve tents is shaded by tall acacia trees and ancient baobabs and is within sight of the well-frequented waterhole. In the afternoon there is time to relax before enjoying an exciting game drive by open four wheel drive vehicle. Huge herds of elephant, greater kudu, Impala and Zebra are all easily spotted whilst leopard lurk in the trees. Due to the camp’s secluded location you are unlikely to see many vehicles as you venture out into the national park. As the sun fades enjoy a sundowner as you watch the game carry on with their daily activities. Return to camp to freshen up before dinner
This morning awaken to the sounds of the bush as a steaming hot cup of tea or coffee is served on your tent’s deck. The rest of the morning is at leisure to enjoy the activities on offer. Return to your camp where your hosts will greet you with a refreshing drink and a well-deserved lunch.
The afternoon you have time to take a refreshing swim in the pool or relax on your private deck with a cool drink and gaze out to the waterhole and watch as the game lazily congregates in the shade to escape the midday sun. As the afternoon progresses you may like to return to the Tarangire on an afternoon game drive. Return to your lodge to freshen up before meeting around the camp fire for a pre-dinner drink as you discuss the day’s adventures.
Today you may choose to either partake in a full day game drive into the heart of the Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch, or remain closer to camp with morning and afternoon game drives. In the afternoon, take a guided walk through the bush, identifying tracks and observing animal behavior at eye level. Walking is the oldest form of safari and allows guests to enjoy nature and sharpen our senses as we take in the sights and sounds of the bush. A walking safari is not a thrill-seeking activity, although spotting an elephant whilst on foot will certainly get guests’ hearts racing!
This evening return to camp and gather round the campfire while you watch the sun set over the plains before you. Settle in at the dining tent for a deliciously prepared meal before retiring to your tent after an eventful day of game viewing.
Today enjoy a quiet and restful morning round the pool, and an early afternoon massage. In the afternoon, venture out of the park to visit the local community and to learn about Sanctuary’s involvement and relationships in the surrounding areas. Visit the woman run bike shop and cycle through the village. Taste the honey at the Mwika bee-keeping projects and visit a local school. Gain a deeper insight as you interact with locals and learn about daily life. There is so much more of Africa to explore!
Rise and shine and enjoy your last morning at the Swala Safari camp. Today we will fly to Zanzibar for three more days of R&R. Zanzibar Island, a.k.a., The Spice Island, was an important stop in the Spice Trade centuries ago. Today, it is one of the few places in the world where saffron is produced, and many other Middle Eastern/Asian spices (cardamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, etc.) are grown here. Visit one of the spice farms where you can see how anise, pepper, cloves etc. grow; you can sample some of the exotic fruit grown on the island.
